3 Websites to Check When Looking for a Nursing Home

Finding a conveniently located and safe nursing home for your loved one is no easy task. It takes research and careful consideration to find a list of homes in the area you need with a positive health inspection and quality score. When searching for a nursing home, there are three websites that you should check.

First, visit U.S. News & World Report to search nursing homes in Arizona. You can start your search by entering in a preferred city or zip code. You can then narrow down your search by name, overall star rating (with 5 stars being the best), and whether or not a home accepts Medicare or Medicaid. This will provide a list of relevant nursing homes matching your criteria. It will also show an overall score, a score for health inspections, nurse staffing, and quality measures. Once you find a home that looks promising, you can click to view a full report, which will include details on inspections, where they scored low (if applicable), fire safety and any penalties the home has received in the last three years.

Second, you’ll want to take a list of 5 or so nursing homes from that website and conduct additional research on Arizona Department of Health Services’ “AZ Care Check” tool. Simply enter in the names of each home and click “Select” when the search result appears. You’ll find a detailed listing of the home, inspection reports by the state including any citations that were listed and what they were for, and any penalties that were ordered by the state and why.

From here you may have narrowed down your 5 homes to about 3. Your last and perhaps most important step is to conduct an online search through Google. This is going to turn up any new stories that have been released about the home, any online reviews on Yelp or other similar websites, blogs, etc… You’ll want to make sure to search through 5 pages or so. Do not settle on what you see on the first page. By digging a little deeper you’ll be able to really get a feel for the nursing home. If nothing negative shows on Google, you’ll be ready for a tour of your top 3 homes.
