140 Nursing Home Residents Forced out of Phoenix Home

It’s the most stressful news anyone can get – you need to move out of your home by the end of next month. It’s even worse news when you’re elderly and in need of special medical care. That’s exactly what happened to 140 residents of the Arizona Grand Senior Living Community in Phoenix. The nursing home located on 24th Street and Camelback Road is being sold to a developer, forcing all of their residents to find another place to live by the end of February.

According to CBS 5, many of the residents are in their 80s and 90s, with a number of them dealing with medical issues. They spoke to a 76-year-old resident in the facility who explained he hasn’t been able to sleep since he found out and that his appetite is off. Fortunately, Arizona Grand is working closely with residents and family members to find a new home, but the move is nerve-racking for many.

Arizona Grand has been serving as a nursing home since the 1970s and has maintained a good reputation over the years. So why are they closing their doors? CBS 5 news reported that the Goodman Group has operated the facility under a long-term contract with the facilities owner, the Arizona Grand Chapter of the Order of Eastern Star. The Goodman Group has exercised an opt-out clause in their contract and the owners decided to sell the property instead of finding a new management group and renovating the facility. It is expected to be an upscale apartment complex instead.

The short notice has left many family members panicking to find a home that can serve their needs in a nearby area with a good reputation. For those looking to find a quality nursing home, start your search on U.S. News and World Report’s website. You can search for nursing homes in designated areas that meet certain criteria (i.e. they accept Medicaid or Medicare, are above 4 stars, etc…). From there, browse each facility and find a full report on how they were rated on health inspections, nurse staffing, quality measures, fire safety, and any penalties they have had in the past three years.
